A Chemistry Lesson in Warwick School

On Friday 12th January 2024, we had a trip to Warwick School. We left the school building at 1:15 pm, which was straight after lunch. It was a 5 to 10 min walk to the large, private school. There were some stairs in the ‘Science’ area. We went to the chemistry lab which was at the top of a flight of stairs.

There were about 24 chairs and all of us couldn’t sit down, but this wasn’t a problem because it is safer to stand in a science lab.  We learnt that crisps were worse for your teeth than coke because it gets stuck in your teeth. We were all suprised by this! 

 Then, we learnt about alkalis and acids. We used blue and red litmus paper to figure out if a chemical was an acid or an alkali. We also used yellow litmus paper to figure out what PH a chemical was. We were also intrigued by the periodic table that hung on the back wall-we learnt that it was a table of elements that would soon make more sense to us! 

At the end, we mixed acids and alkali to make a rainbow. The mixture was acid, alkali, acid. A group of Year 11s and Sixth formers supported us as we investigated the PH Scale. 

It was a great experience to learn what Chemistry at Secondary School would be like and to experience a Science Lab.
